Cupping Therapy with Amy Zhu, Registered Acupuncturist, in New Westminster

Cupping is a traditional technique from Chinese medicine that uses gentle suction cups to lift the skin and underlying tissue. At New West Wellness Centre, Registered Acupuncturist Amy Zhu offers cupping on its own or as part of an acupuncture visit.

Why people try cupping

Patients often come in for cupping to:

  • Ease muscle tightness in the back, neck and shoulders
  • Relax and unwind
  • Add to an acupuncture visit for a more complete session
  • Ask about skin texture or the look of cellulite on the thighs, hips or arms

What about cupping for cellulite?

Some people ask whether cupping can improve the look of cellulite. Research on this is limited, and results vary from person to person. Amy will talk through your goals at your first visit and give you an honest picture of what cupping can and can’t do.

What to expect at your session

Your first visit starts with a short conversation about your health and goals. Amy places the cups on the treatment area, sometimes gliding them gently across the skin. Most people find the suction comfortable and relaxing, similar to a firm massage.

You may notice round marks afterwards. They’re normal, not bruises, and usually fade within a few days to a week. Amy will recommend a treatment plan that suits you; there’s no set number of sessions.

Who it may not suit

Cupping isn’t right for everyone. It may not be suitable during pregnancy, over broken or sensitive skin, or with certain medical conditions or blood-thinning medications. Amy will review your health history first.
