Prenatal & Postnatal Massage in New Westminster

Pregnancy and the months after birth bring real physical changes: a shifting centre of gravity, low back and hip pain, swelling, sciatica, poor sleep and new strain from feeding and carrying your baby. Prenatal and postnatal massage with our Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) offers safe, gentle relief at every stage, with direct billing to most extended health plans.

Prenatal massage

Prenatal massage is adapted for pregnancy, with positioning chosen for your comfort and safety. Depending on your stage of pregnancy and what feels best, your RMT may use:

  • A special pregnancy cushion: a supportive cushion with a cut-out for your belly, so you can lie face-down comfortably without pressure on your baby. Many patients love being able to lie on their stomach again.
  • Side-lying, supported with pillows between your knees and under your belly and head.
  • Semi-reclined, propped up comfortably for front-of-body work.

Your RMT will help you get settled and check in throughout. You can change position at any time.

Prenatal massage may help with:

  • Low back, hip and pelvic pain
  • Sciatica and leg cramps
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Swelling in the legs and feet
  • Stress, fatigue and trouble sleeping

Postnatal massage

After birth, your body is recovering while you’re also feeding, lifting and carrying a baby. Postnatal massage can ease upper back, neck and shoulder strain, help with low back and hip recovery, and give you an hour that’s just for you. Treatments are adapted if you’ve had a C-section or other birth complications.

You’re welcome to bring your baby to postnatal appointments. Please confirm with your practitioner when booking.

Is prenatal massage safe?

Yes. Registered Massage Therapists are trained in pregnancy massage and adapt positioning and techniques for safety. Your RMT will ask about your pregnancy at your first visit. If your pregnancy is considered high-risk, please check with your doctor or midwife before booking.

What to expect

Your first visit starts with a health history about your pregnancy or birth, current symptoms and comfort. You’ll stay covered with a sheet throughout, and your therapist will check in on pressure and positioning. You can ask to change position or take a break at any time.

First visits must be at least 60 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lie on my stomach?

Yes, in many cases. We have a special pregnancy cushion with a cut-out for your belly, so you can lie face-down comfortably and safely. If that doesn’t feel right, or later in pregnancy, your RMT can use side-lying or semi-reclined positions with pillow support instead.

When can I start prenatal massage?

Many patients start in the second trimester, but massage can be adapted throughout pregnancy. Your RMT will discuss what’s right for you.

How soon after birth can I book?

Many people book within a few weeks of giving birth. After a C-section or complicated delivery, check with your care provider first.

Can I bring my baby?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring your baby to postnatal appointments. Please confirm with your practitioner when booking.
