Moxibustion Therapy in New Westminster

What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion (“moxa”) has been used alongside acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Moxa is made from the dried leaves of the mugwort plant. When warmed near the skin, it produces a deep, soothing heat over targeted points.
In BC, moxibustion is recognized as part of acupuncture practice. At our clinic it is provided only by a registered acupuncturist.
How we use it: we use indirect moxibustion. The moxa never touches your skin. Our multi-head moxibustion unit holds the moxa a safe distance above the treatment area and draws smoke away through built-in fans, so your session stays comfortable and hands-free.
Why people choose moxibustion
In traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion is used to warm and support the body. Clients often ask about it for:
- Muscle and joint stiffness, especially when it feels worse in cold or damp weather
- Ongoing aches and tension
- Digestive comfort
- Menstrual discomfort
- General relaxation and wellbeing
- Breech presentation in later pregnancy (only with your midwife’s or doctor’s approval)
An honest note on research: breech presentation is the most studied use. A 2023 Cochrane review found moxibustion probably reduces the chance of a baby being breech at birth, though it did not clearly reduce cesarean rates. For most other uses, research is still limited. Your acupuncturist will talk with you about what is realistic for your situation.
What to expect at your visit
- Health history and consent. Your acupuncturist reviews your health history and goals, explains the treatment, and asks for your consent.
- Positioning. You rest comfortably on the treatment table, fully supported.
- Treatment. The moxa heads are positioned over your treatment area. Most people feel a gentle, spreading warmth. Tell us right away if anything feels too hot and we will adjust.
- Acupuncture. Moxibustion is usually combined with acupuncture in the same session.
- Afterward. Your skin may look a little pink where the heat was applied. Drink water and avoid very hot showers or saunas for the rest of the day.
What to wear: comfortable clothing that lets the treatment area be exposed easily. Moxa has an earthy, herbal scent that may stay on clothing briefly.
Is moxibustion safe?
Moxibustion is generally well tolerated when done by a trained, registered practitioner. The main risk is skin irritation or a minor burn, which is why we use indirect moxa and check in with you throughout.
Please tell your acupuncturist before treatment if you:
- Are pregnant or trying to conceive
- Have reduced sensation in your skin (for example, diabetic neuropathy)
- Have asthma, a lung condition, or sensitivity to smoke or strong scents
- Have a heart condition or a pacemaker
- Have lymphedema, a bleeding disorder, or take blood thinners
- Have a fever, open wound, or skin condition in the treatment area
If moxibustion isn’t a good fit, your acupuncturist will suggest other options.
Frequently asked questions
Does moxibustion hurt? No. It should feel warm and soothing, never painful. Your acupuncturist will adjust the distance or stop if it gets too hot.
Is it smoky? Moxa does produce some smoke and an herbal scent. Our moxibustion unit has built-in fans that draw smoke away from you during treatment.
How long is a session? Moxibustion is part of your acupuncture 45 minute appointment but a 60 minute First Visit is required prior to this session. Book Here
How many sessions will I need? It depends on your goals. Your acupuncturist will suggest a plan after your first visit.
Is it covered by insurance? Many extended health plans cover acupuncture by a registered acupuncturist. Check your plan’s coverage and whether you need a referral. Most plans your acupuncturist can direct bill. If, not she will provide a receipt for your claim.
Can I have moxibustion while pregnant? Only after discussing it with your midwife or doctor, and your acupuncturist. Moxibustion for breech presentation is usually done around 34 to 36 weeks.
