Hot stone massage combines registered massage therapy with smooth, heated basalt stones. The warmth helps muscles relax more quickly, so your therapist can work into tension with less pressure. It’s a deeply calming treatment, especially in the colder months. At New West Wellness Centre, hot stone massage is offered by Sachiyo Lai, RMT.
Benefits of hot stone massage
- Eases muscle tension and stiffness
- Promotes deep relaxation and stress relief
- Warms and soothes tight back, neck and shoulder muscles
- Supports better sleep
What to expect
Your RMT warms the stones to a safe, comfortable temperature, then uses them alongside hands-on massage techniques and may place them on key areas of your body. You’ll always be asked about comfort, and stones are adjusted or removed immediately if they feel too warm. Your first visit starts with a short health history so your treatment can be tailored to you.
Who it may not suit
Hot stone massage isn’t recommended during pregnancy, or for people with certain conditions such as diabetes with reduced sensation, circulation problems or skin sensitivity. Your RMT will review your health history first. If you’re pregnant, see Prenatal & Postnatal Massage instead.

Direct billing
Hot stone massage is provided by a Registered Massage Therapist, so it’s generally covered by extended health plans as registered massage therapy. We direct bill most primary providers, so you only pay what your plan doesn’t cover. How direct billing works
Frequently asked questions
Will the stones be too hot?
No. The stones are heated to a comfortable temperature and checked before they touch your skin. Tell your RMT at any time if you’d like them cooler.
How is hot stone different from relaxation massage?
Both are calming. Hot stone adds heat, which helps tight muscles release faster and feels especially soothing. See Relaxation Massage and Deep Tissue Massage.
