Introduction to
Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is among the oldest healing
practices in the world that originated in China. It is
based on an energetic model that encourages your body’s
natural healing abilities, therefore enables you to
regain and keep physical and emotional health. The
function of acupuncture is to ensure Qi (the flow of
vital life energy). Qi circulates in human body through
specific pathways called Meridians. When Qi flows
smoothly through meridian pathways, it will nourish
every cell, organ and tissue in your body. But if Qi
becomes “blocked or obstructed” somewhere in your body,
it may lead to pain and illness.

 The
treatment:
An acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at
specific points called acupuncture points, or acupoints
along your meridian pathways. The safe and painless
insertion of the needles unblocks the damming or
obstruction of your meridians. Releasing this blockage
allows the Qi
to freely circulate, eliminating pain and restoring the
body’s ability to heal itself.

 Is
acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is very safe. All needles are individually
pre-package and sterile. Each needle is disposed of
after one use.

 Does it
hurt when the needles are inserted?
We use very fine needles. When the needles are inserted
there is little if any discomfort. Once inserted, the
patient may feel
numbness, distension or other sensations. Most patients
experience a calm and relaxing sensation after the
needles are inserted into the skin.

 Can
acupuncture help me?
Acupuncture is extremely successful in the treatment of
a many conditions. The following is a list of some
of the most common conditions treatable by Acupuncture:

 Allergies

 Toothache

 Constipation

 Diarrhea

 Stress incontinence

 Urinary tract infections

 Infertility in women and men

Menstrual irregularities - Irregular, heavy, or painful
menstruation

 PMS

 Arthritis

 Dizziness

 Frozen shoulder

 Headache and migraine

 Insomnia

 Low back pain

 Neck and shoulder pain

 Sciatica

 Tennis elbow

 Anxiety

 Depression

 Weight loss

Does acupuncture have side effects?
You need to be aware that:
-drowsiness occurs after treatment in a small number of
patients, and if affected, you are advised not to drive
-minor bleeding or bruising is very rare
-pain during treatment occurs in about 1% of treatments
- you may find that in the short term after treatment,
your symptoms
may in fact get worse before an improvement sets in.
This is a quite
common but you should let your acupuncturist know.
-fainting can occur in certain patients, particularly
with patients
who are hungry.

 What
type of schooling do acupuncturists have?
Registered Acupuncturists in BC receive three years of
extensive full time training at certified schools. The
acupuncturists must then pass a comprehensive exam from
the College of TCM Practitioners and Acupuncturists of
B.C [CTCMA] to become Licensed.

 Cancellation Policy
Appointments you booked are reserved especially for you.
If you need to reschedule please be sure to call the
centre 24 hours before your scheduled appointment so we
can make your time available to another patient. Less
than 24 hour cancellation notice or a missed appointment
will be charged the full cost.

 Acupuncture Treatment Cost per session

Initial consultation and treatment (60 - 90min) $ 60.00
Follow up treatment (60min) $ 60.00
Package of 6 treatments (= $ 55.00 each) $330.00
Package of twelve treatments. (= $ 50.00 each) $ 600.00

What
will happen on my first visit?
During your initial exam, a full health history will be
taken with questions regarding your health, lifestyle,
and any other information necessary for diagnosis. After
the interview process, you will receive treatment. This
initial visit is about 60 to 90 minutes.

 What will
happen during my treatment?
Where the acupuncture needle has been inserted, you may
feel a vague numbness, heaviness, tingling, heat, or
dull ache. Sometimes people will experience the
sensation of energy spreading from the needle. This is
called the “Qi” or energy sensation. All of these
reactions are a good sign that the treatment is working.
The Qi sensation is important for a successful treatment
so when the patient is unaware of
a needle being inserted the needle is manipulated by the
acupuncturist until a sensation is felt, usually the
sensation stops as soon as the manipulation stops but
occasionally it will take a few minutes to subside.
During treatment, you may feel energized but a feeling
of calm and well being is more common. The needles stay
in for about twenty five to thirty minutes and often
people will fall asleep during that time.

 What
will happen after my treatment?
People often experience a sense of deep relaxation, and
may sleep a deep sleep the night of the treatment. It’s
also common for people to feel energized or euphoric.

 How
many treatments will I need?
Six to ten treatments are usual for most conditions, Of
course not all conditions or individuals will respond in
the same way or within the same time frame. Some
conditions respond immediately, others take longer. The
more serious and/or long standing the condition, the
more treatments will be needed to show improvement. If a
condition is going
to respond to acupuncture, it will do so within six
treatments.
The number of treatments that a patient will require
depends on a variety of factors, the severity and
duration of your problem, your current health, and your
overall quality and quantity of Qi. Your acupuncturist
may suggest one or two treatments per week for several
weeks, or monthly visits over time for health
maintenance, seasonal “tune ups”, or preventative
medicine.

 Pricing

 Is
Acupuncture covered by Medical Service Plan (MSP)?Effective
April 1, 2008 MSP will partially cover acupuncture
visits. (Patient with family income under $28,000 or on
Disability). Please check with MSP to see if you
qualify)

 Will my
health insurance cover Acupuncture?

Most extended health plans provide coverage for
acupuncture
treatments, including ICBC and WCB claims. Contact your
benefits advisor at work or your insurance provider to
confirm coverage for each year. You will be asked to pay
us directly at the time of treatment. We will issue you
a receipt and then you need to follow up with your
insurance company for reimbursement.

Aches and pains are signs that your body isn’t working right. Your nervous system controls and regulates every cell, organ and tissue of your body. When your nervous system doesn’t work right, you don’t work right. Physical, chemical or emotional stresses produce a defensive posture. Muscles contract, locking spinal joints that pinch or irritate nearby nerves. Lack of nervous system integrity sets the stage for disease and ill health. A thorough examination helps chiropractors find these vertebral subluxations. Applying a precise force to stuck spinal joints helps the body right itself. Health usually returns as frequent visits early on help to restore nervous system integrity. That’s why chiropractic care has helped millions get well and stay well.

Questions you may have about Chiropractors and what they do

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are “remarkably safe.” By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record. A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited. Compare the statistics. Adjustments are about 100 times safer than taking an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Will adjustments make my spine too loose?

No. Only the spinal joints that are “locked up” receive adjustments. The occasional spinal joints that move too much, are passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can stabilize and heal.

How many adjustments will I need?

The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their individual health goals. Many patients sense some progress within a week or two of frequent visits. Visits are less often as your spine stabilizes. In difficult cases, complete healing can take months or even years.

Why would a newborn get adjusted?

Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Some signs of spinal distress on an infant could be colic, unusual crying, poor appetite or erratic sleeping habits. Adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato is involved.

Can I adjust myself?

No. Some people can make their joints “pop” but that’s not an adjustment! Worse, damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even your chiropractic doctor must consult a colleague to benefit from chiropractic care.

What does an adjustment feel like?

Most patients report a sense of well-being or a feeling of calmness. Since repeated adjustments are necessary, if adjustments didn’t feel good, patients wouldn’t return to finish their care. Chiropractic doctors are expert at making adjustments feel good.

Can patients with osteoporosis get chiropractic care?

Of course. When developing a care plan, your chiropractic doctor considers the unique circumstances of each patient. There are many ways to adjust the spine. The method selected will be best suited to your age, size and condition.

Isn’t some back pain normal?

Pain of any kind, at any age, is a sign that something isn’t right. Pain is the way your body signals that a limit has been reached or a problem has developed. Since we can adapt, minor aches and pains are often shrugged off. While they may go away, if the underlying problem remains unattended, the problem can slowly worsen until it becomes more difficult and expensive to resolve.

Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?

Yes. Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. Surgery often causes instability above or below the involved level. This will be the focus of your chiropractic care.

What are vertebral subluxations?

A vertebral subluxation is the result of spinal bones with improper motion or position affecting nerve communications between your brain and your body.
sub = less than | luxation = dislocation
A vertebral subluxation is a stress response. Muscles go into spasm. Spinal bones lock up. And adjacent nerves are choked or chaffed. This interferes with the control and regulation of your body. This garbles communications between the brain and parts of your body.

A dropped cell phone call is irritating. But dropped communications between your brain and your body can seriously impair your health!
Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems beyond just headaches and back pain. For example. Interfere with nerve impulses going to or from your stomach: stomach problems.
Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. These nerve impulses travel through your spine. So having a spine free of vertebral subluxation is essential for optimal health.
Only a chiropractic examination can detect vertebral subluxations. And only chiropractic adjustments can reduce their effect to your nervous system, naturally.
Find out if you have vertebral subluxations before they become more serious and more difficult to correct.

How come I’ve never heard of vertebral subluxations before?

True, vertebral subluxations have not received the press that say, AIDS, cancer, cholesterol or heart disease have. However, vertebral subluxations are just as important and are often the underlying cause of a wide variety of health problems.

How do you get vertebral subluxations?

There are three basic causes of vertebral subluxations. Physical causes include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions, and improper lifting. Stress, anger and fear are examples of emotional causes of vertebral subluxations. Alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet can be chemical causes of vertebral subluxations.

How can vertebral subluxations be corrected?

The primary form of care to reduce vertebral subluxations is a schedule of chiropractic adjustments. By applying a specific and precise force, in the right direction and at the right time, over time, changes in the position and motion of spinal bones can be made.

How can I tell if I have vertebral subluxations?

You can have vertebral subluxations and not even know it. Like the early stages of tooth decay or cancer, vertebral subluxations can be present before warning signs appear. The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of any vertebral subluxations you may have.

Can vertebral subluxations clear up on their own?

Sometimes. Today’s hectic lifestyles are a constant source of vertebral subluxations. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to self-correct many of these minor problems as we bend and stretch, or when we sleep at night. When vertebral subluxations don’t resolve, you need to see a chiropractic doctor for an adjustment!

Extended Health Plans
These plans are offered by employers which provide benefits for most of our services. Plans vary either by percentage covered or annual total limits. Contact your benefits provider for a full listing of covered products and services.

BC’s Medical Services Plan

BC’s Medical Services Plan may offer some subsidy for treatments rendered by our Centre, if you are an individual on premium assistance. To determine if any subsidy is available, please contact 604.669.6667 or look Under “What coverage is available when I go to the physical therapist, massage therapist, chiropractor, naturopath or podiatrist?”, on their website here

No Physician Referral Is Necessary
Referrals are no longer required to see a Registered Massage Therapist. However, some Extended Health Plans may require a Referral from the doctor prior to massage treatment for the expense to be eligible for reimbursement. We do recommend that you research your Extended Health Care coverage to determine what, if any, guidelines are in place for your treatment expenses to be eligible.
